Triple-Double
When a player records double digits (10+) in three of five statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks) in a single game. Russell Westbrook holds the career record.
Pick and Roll
The most common offensive play in basketball. A screener sets a "pick" on the ball-handler's defender, then "rolls" toward the basket. Creates a 2-on-1 advantage.
Salary Cap
A limit on the total amount a team can spend on player salaries. The NBA uses a "soft cap" with various exceptions that allow teams to exceed it (Bird rights, mid-level exception).
Plus/Minus (+/-)
The point differential when a player is on the court. If a player has a +10, their team outscored the opponent by 10 points during their minutes.
True Shooting Percentage (TS%)
The most complete measure of shooting efficiency. Accounts for field goals, three-pointers, AND free throws. Formula: Points / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)).
PER (Player Efficiency Rating)
A per-minute rating that sums up a player's statistical contributions. Created by John Hollinger. League average is 15.0. MVP-level is 25+.
Hack-a-Shaq
Strategy of intentionally fouling poor free-throw shooters (like Shaquille O'Neal) to force them to the line. Named after Shaq, who shot ~52% from the line career.
Small Ball
Playing without a traditional center, using a smaller, faster lineup. Popularized by the Golden State Warriors' "Death Lineup" with Draymond Green at center.
Load Management
Resting healthy players during the regular season to preserve them for the playoffs. Controversial but increasingly common. Kawhi Leonard is the most notable example.
Lottery
The NBA Draft Lottery determines the picking order for the 14 non-playoff teams. The team with the worst record has the best odds (14%) at the #1 pick.
Flagrant Foul
A foul involving excessive or unnecessary contact. Flagrant 1 = unnecessary contact (2 free throws + possession). Flagrant 2 = unnecessary and excessive (ejection).
Eurostep
A move where a player takes a step in one direction, then quickly steps in the opposite direction to evade a defender while driving to the basket. Popularized by Manu Ginobili.
Floor Spacing
Having shooters spread across the court to stretch the defense and create driving lanes. Essential in modern basketball — teams need at least 3 shooters.
Stretch Five
A center who can shoot three-pointers, pulling the opposing big man away from the rim. Example: Kristaps Porziņģis, Brook Lopez.
Two-Way Contract
A contract that allows a player to split time between the NBA and G League. Limited to 50 days with the NBA team. Teams can have up to 2 two-way players.
