Dusty May's Blueprint: Who's Getting Minutes in Ann Arbor?

Look, the Dusty May hire at Michigan is official, and the immediate fantasy impact is… murky. We’re talking about a guy who turned Florida Atlantic into a national darling, sure, but his player archetypes and rotation preferences are going to be completely different in Ann Arbor. He's known for developing guys, but also for a certain style of play that might not translate directly to the Big Ten on Day One. This isn't a plug-and-play situation for fantasy managers trying to snag a sleeper.

The Wolverines finished 8-24 last season, dead last in the Big Ten, and frankly, they were a fantasy wasteland. Terrance Williams II was probably the only guy you even sniffed for a streamer, averaging 12.4 points and 4.5 boards in 31 minutes per game. That's not exactly setting the world on fire, but it's something. Will he even be back? That’s the first domino to fall for any semblance of fantasy value. His decision, and those of others like Dug McDaniel (16.3 PPG, 3.7 APG), are going to dictate everything for May's initial roster construction.

May's FAU teams were deep, often running nine or ten guys out there, with nobody playing more than 30 minutes regularly. Johnell Davis, their leading scorer, only averaged 18.2 points and 29.8 minutes last year. If that philosophy carries over, it means potential fantasy value could be capped for any single player. You're not looking at a high-usage monster under May, typically. This could be a headache for fantasy, as distributing stats among many players often leaves nobody with enough to be consistently rosterable outside of deep leagues.

Transfer Portal Watch: Where Does the Value Lie?

Here's the thing: Michigan's roster is going to be almost entirely new. This isn't just about May; it's about a complete overhaul. The transfer portal is going to be May's primary shopping ground, and that's where we need to keep our eyes peeled for fantasy gold. He’s going to bring in players who fit his system – high-IQ guys, good shooters, and players who can defend multiple positions. But who are those guys?

Right now, it's all speculation. Think back to what May did at FAU. He found guys like Alijah Martin (13.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG) and Bryan Greenlee (8.7 PPG, 2.9 APG) and turned them into key contributors. He values experience and chemistry. So, if he brings in some older transfers, especially from mid-major programs, don't sleep on them. They might not have the name recognition, but they'll likely have the opportunity and the system fit to shine. I’m thinking a potential long-shot pick could be a lesser-known forward who suddenly gets 25+ minutes and a decent usage rate.

I don’t care what ESPN says, Michigan isn't going to be a top-25 team next year. Not with this kind of turnover and a new coach in a brutal conference. However, that doesn't mean there won't be fantasy value. Somebody has to score, somebody has to rebound. Your best bet will be to monitor the transfer commitments closely, looking for players who might benefit from increased volume in a new system. If May brings in a guard who can create his own shot and distribute, that's a potential assist machine. If he finds a stretch-four, that’s a three-point threat.

My bold prediction: Dusty May lands at least two impact transfers who average double-digit points, and one of them becomes a sneaky mid-round fantasy pick in 12-team leagues by January.
